Mental Health Nurses
Looking after one’s mental health has become a core focus in recent years, with more and more people looking to seek help from mental health professionals as treatment for their conditions. Mental health nurses assist in the promotion and support of a person’s recovery from mental health issues, ranging from anxiety and depression to eating disorders and addiction. Due to the nature of their role, professionals working in this field must complete a degree in nursing approved by the Nursing & Midwifery Council as well as partake in extensive training to be able to deal with the vast array of issue and conditions that they will be treating. The roles and responsibilities of a mental heath nurse can vary and include, but are not limited to:
- Building relationships with, reassuring, and listening to and talking to patients.
- Liaise with doctors or social workers on cases.
- Administering medication and encouraging patients to take part in prescribed activities.
- Agreeing and reviewing care plans and monitoring progress.
- Writing and updating patient records.
- Giving advice and arranging support for patients, relatives and carers.
- Evaluate treatment success at case conferences and meetings.
