For many patients, A&E is the point at which they first enter a hospital, and thus A&E nurses tend to be the first staff they come into contact with. This makes A&E nurses an essential part of the medical care team, as they can set the tone for the entire experience that a patient has whilst they are under care. Moreover, A&E nurses also provide essential support across the A&E department and can be called upon to deal with a range of actions. With this comes a great degree of pressure and responsibility, as many of the patients they will deal with are in a critical state, meaning that they need the most professional and attentive care possible. As such, the role of an A&E nurse is one of great importance when it comes to setting the bar in regard to standards within medical care.

What does an A&E nurse actually do?

A&E nurses are the first to hear why a patient has been brought into the emergency department. They will take vital signs and ask for information to help establish what has happened and what the next steps will need to be. A skilled A&E nurse will be able to make well informed, logical decisions quickly and this can have a huge impact on the way that the A&E department runs overall. A&E tends to receive a high number of patients, and so having nursing staff who can deal with this pressure effectively is essential for the patient’s recovery.

Why are A&E nurses so important?

Life changing decisions- When patients arrive in A&E, nurses must make quick decisions about what actions to make next, which can sometimes mean the difference between life and death. Therefore, having skilled and experienced staff in these roles with an extensive knowledge of the field is imperative for the department’s success in effectively treating the most high risk patients.

Dealing with tension and difficult patients- Although every department in the hospital can experience problematic patients, the A&E department tends to have more than Its fair share of problem cases. For example, this can include drunk or irrational patients, as well as those who are getting impatient over waiting times. A good A&E nurse can not only ensure that people are being processed as fast as possible, but also work in a way to diffuse tension when it inevitably arises.

Skills and experience- Working in A&E as a nurse means gaining experience alongside a range of different medical professionals. An A&E nurse will have the skills and experience to interact with all medical staff to ensure that they have the information that they need to make critical decisions.

The communication factor- A&E nurses have exceptionally clear communication skills. Not only do they need to be able to relay complex medical information to patients in a way that is understandable, but to communicate with medical professionals of all levels too. This could mean dealing with someone who has no medical knowledge one minute to a trauma surgeon, psychiatrist or paramedic the next.

A&E nurses have an essential role to play in the smooth running of any emergency department. They are not only key patient-facing staff, but also keep the channels of communication open between medical professionals all over the hospital to ensure the correct steps are taken towards effectively looking after their patients.

The role of a paediatric nurse is an essential one, providing specialist care to children of all ages from birth up until their early youth. Paediatric nurses not only make a huge difference to the lives of the children that they come into contact with, but are also an essential part of the way that a hospital operates too. They provide crucial supportive medical care to one of the most vulnerable groups of patients in a way that enables more positive outcomes to be achieved.

What does a paediatric nurse do?

There are many different responsibilities involved in being a paediatric nurse. Some of these include providing support and advice to relatives and children, helping to educate and advise and also explaining what’s involved in treatments and procedures. A paediatric nurse will also be looking for changes in symptoms or physical deficits within their patients that can be signs that treatment needs to be altered. This role also includes the handling and administration of drugs as well as pain management for their young patients. In addition to this, there are many practical responsibilities, such as setting up drips, checking intravenous infusions and providing assistance with tests and evaluations. A paediatric nurse will also be providing special and attentive care to all of their young patients, which is a critical aspect for ensuring that they feel safe in an often frightening environment.

Why are paediatric nurses so crucial?

Knowledge and experience-Treating children is not the same as providing adult care and an experienced paediatric nurse can bring a wealth of skill and insight to delivering expert care to children.

Being there for the families- When children are sick this can be an incredibly anxious time for their families and the paediatric nurse has a key role to play in providing support, dealing with problems and addressing concerns and options.

Insight and understanding- Many young children may not be able to express how they are feeling but a good pediatric nurse can interpret behaviours and reactions to draw conclusions and identify what’s happening.

Responsible and observant- Paediatric nurses are highly observant and this can be crucial in an environment where emotions are running high and situations can change quickly. They are also able to take responsibility for making essential decisions when it comes to identifying the most essential next steps.

Empathy and compassion- Although nurses all over the hospital will have to deal with difficult situations and distressed relatives, when it comes to children who are sick or dying this can require particular sensitivity. Paediatric nurses are especially compassionate and empathetic, not just to the children themselves but also to what their families are going through.

Flexible and adaptable- There are many different situations that may require pediatric nurses, from hospitals and homes to working within the community. These are skilled and flexible professionals who can adapt to a range of environments.

These are just some of the reasons why paediatric nurses are essential within medical care. With the crucial support that they provide for patients and their families, as well as hospital staff, paediatric nurses are a crucial element in ensuring that patients feel well informed and supported on their road to recovery.

The winter season is usually the busiest in the UK healthcare sector, with this year being no exception due to the ongoing effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Being short staffed can have a very negative impact on both staff and patients. It can also create difficulties in respect to coping with current workloads - and trying to process backlogs that were created earlier in the year when COVID-19 first hit. Temporary nurses can provide support to your staff and help ensure continuity of care even when so much still remains uncertain. Therefore, we here at Last Call Healthcare have put together a list of why temporary nurses can provide crucial support this winter:

Providing immediate relief - Temporary nurses are able to arrive in a situation and begin work straight away, without needing training or time to integrate. Their skills and experience enable them to hit the ground running to help provide relief wherever it is required, whether this is in coping with a wave of COVID cases or filling the gap where other staff members are off sick or isolating. This can give your team immediate relief if they are really feeling the pressure.

A resource for skills shortages - There could be many reasons why you currently have skill gaps and working with temporary nursing staff can help you to fill them. Most temporary nurses have a wealth of skills and experience and are highly qualified. If you have skills shortages due to slow recruitment, then working with temporary nurses can enable you to fill these straight away and avoid providing inconsistent patient care or falling behind on key targets.

Ensuring safety and standards are maintained - When staff is too stretched, mistakes can be made. Jobs may be rushed and people can push themselves to breaking point to try and get through an endless list of tasks. Working with temporary nursing staff means that you won’t have to push your current staff to breaking point. Whether you are struggling with the increased pressure of winter or the workforce is smaller than usual, temporary nurses can step in and provide the cover that you need to ensure that safety and standards are being maintained across the board.

Keeping spirits up - It’s not easy to work in healthcare at this time of year, especially in the middle of a pandemic. However, everything tends to feel a lot worse when there are staff shortages and people are really stretched. This can have a very negative impact on morale and may also lead to burn out and sick days that can reduce the size of your staff even further. Temporary nurses can help to prevent this from happening, bringing fresh enthusiasm and energy into an environment and ensuring that everyone has the support that they need.

During the winter season, the healthcare sector comes under an incredible amount of pressure - and that’s before you even take the impact of the pandemic into account. Utilising temporary nursing staff can help to support survival during these unprecedented times, ensuring that your team will grow and thrive in the New Year.
